Tbourida & Equestrian Arts

Equestrian arts, in essence, aim to demonstrate aesthetic and precise harmony between a rider and their horse. Based on key principles of absence of force and constraints, these arts emphasize harmonious communication from the rider, respectful of the horse’s physiology and needs.

Tbourida

The TBOURIDA, a pillar of national equestrian heritage

An ancestral equestrian art deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, Tbourida—derived from the word Baroud, meaning “gunpowder”—dates back to the 15th century. Practiced mainly in rural areas during religious and national holidays, it embodies a living expression of the Kingdom’s cultural identity.

In line with the Royal High Guidelines for the safeguarding, promotion, and sustainable development of intangible cultural heritage, Tbourida was inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This international recognition is a major milestone for the entire equine sector and calls for collective action to preserve and promote this unique cultural heritage.

The Tbourida, a fascinating and sophisticated equestrian show

The Tbourida, an equestrian discipline that brings together the largest number of horses and riders in Morocco each year, pays tribute to horses through its codified rituals, spectacular performances, and powerful symbols. It celebrates Barb and Arab-Barb horses and highlights the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship. The Kingdom’s finest artisans—saddlers, tailors, engravers, and gunsmiths—contribute to the richness of this tradition by crafting harnesses, costumes, embroidered rugs, and ornate rifles, which are the visual and cultural hallmarks of the Tbourida.

The Horse, Treasure of Morocco

الفرس كنز المغرب, meaning “The Horse Treasure of Morocco,” captures the essence of the historic relationship between horses and the Moroccan people. Horses are at the heart of Moroccan culture, symbolizing not only a rich tradition but also a deep connection to the country’s past and present. This expression highlights the cultural importance of horses as living witnesses to Morocco’s equestrian heritage.
